WA Forum for Regenerative Investment

In this first for Western Australia, we are bringing together local and national thought leaders and domain experts to deep diving into the role impact investment in regional WA to drive regenerative social, cultural, environmental and economic outcomes for our communities.

Supported through the WA Government’s X-TEND Investor Education program, the WA Forum for Regenerative Investment brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, land managers, investors, and experts along with Traditional Owners with the goal of increasing purposeful investment in WA’s natural resources.

The forum will consider case-studies from around the world and here in WA to bring together ideas and sectors that can drive the agenda forward.

What do we mean by Regenerative Investment?

Impact investment focused on regeneration of WA’s regions…

While regenerative agriculture is certainly one of the themes for this paper and the forum, we have intentionally described this as regenerative investment. We think that, as an investment philosophy for WA’s regions, it can encapsulate more:

  • It can include agricultural investments that may not fit the regenerative ag definition but still combine social, environmental, and economic impacts to contribute to regional regeneration.
  • Forestry investments that put a price on forest health and landscape values, support thriving communities, and produce premium world class forest products.
  • Investments in value chain operations that rebalances the earnt value back into communities and supports healthy economic development.
  • Incorporates First Nations’ cultural authority, consent, and ownership as core metrics in investment decision-making.

If something is regenerative, it is consistently supporting and manifesting the act of regeneration. It consistently gives new life and vigour to our social, economic, and cultural life. This is how the natural world works after all, and it should always be our guide.

Impact investments are defined as investments that seek to create positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. Impact investments seek financial returns ranging from competitive, risk-adjusted market-rate returns to capital preservation and can be made across asset classes and geographies.
